After studies in literature and visual culture, Yann Tonnar starts his career in 1999 as a tv reporter for RTL. His talent for the portrayal of quirky individuals is quickly noted in his short tv features, such as the summer 2002 series "Camping". In 2003 he spends a year at the New York Film Academy, then establishes himself as an independent filmmaker, based in Luxembourg.
His first documentary film "Weilerbach", deals with an asylum seeker's home observed over a period of three years. This film is followed by "Mir wëllen net bleiwen" (co-directed with Pascal Becker), a feature length documentary on Luxembourgish emigrates. He also directed a number of animated music videos, selected in festivals worldwide. He is a regular contributor with the contemporary art space "Casino Luxembourg – Forum d'art contemporain". In 2011 he signed the camera work and editing for the installation "Music While We Work", a work by Taiwanese artist Hong-Kai Wang, commissioned for the Taiwanese Pavillion at the 54th Venice Art Biennial. The same year Yann Tonnar also wrote and directed two episodes for the first Luxembourgish sitcom "Weemseesdet".
2011 also sees the release of "Schrebergaart", a comeback to the documentary film, that confirms a talent as an observer of the human nature, a point of view that challenges conventions and a idiosyncratic sense of humor.
